PaperbackSwap.com (PBS.com) was the first online book swapping service. It operates on a credit system and free to use. PBS.com’s membership is 91 percent women who are avid readers; and, their book preference is erotic romance. The site has more than four million total books with 600,000 plus unique titles, and covers all 50 states and five territories.

Entrepreneurial Risk: Jordan Baltimore and Oyster Digital Media

As the global downturn entered the end of 2009, Jordan Baltimore had to consider alternative funding for his start-up company, Oyster Digital Media. He had planned for venture capital to develop his “Oysters”— electronic shelf tags for retail stores. He was ready to launch his business just as funding became scarce and uncertain. Should he continue to try for venture capital? Angel investors or Friends-and-Family were alternatives, but they could involve lower valuation, less money, and delay.

To Outsource the Property Management System or Not: A Marriott International Case Study

Marriott International Inc. faces a great expansion in the global market. Its property management system cannot match its expansion speed. The IT department of Marriott must solve this problem. IT managers consider whether to outsource its property management systems or not. This case presents the background of Marriott, its current property management system, and concerns, which IT managers need to make the decision about outsourcing.

Forecasting Offertory Revenue at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church

This case describes the perilous financial situation facing a church in Daphne, Alabama. St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church has seen its savings balance dwindle in recent years, and the pastor is concerned that the parish will be out of money within the next six months. His financial advisors have suggested that the church’s budgeting process is flawed. They recommend a new focus on realistically predicting the offertory revenue for each month and then ensuring that the expenses match those.


Decoding the Brand: IPL( Indo Petoil Ltd)

The objective this is to tie marketing analytics to the decision points faced by Indo Petoil Ltd (IPL) The lubricant division of IPL is at a cross road in the Indian operations. The company now wishes to increase it is market share from 1% to 3 % in the automotive lubricant segment. The company conducted a six month long ground activation activity from September 2010 targeting the engine oil shop retailers and mechanics.

Bringing the Class to Life: Engaging Students in Operations & Supply Chain Management

This special session focuses bringing teaching to life through the use of “hooks”. Whilst we will briefly present teaching theories in relation to sensory learning, the focus of the session is on applications that attendees can take away from the conference and incorporate in their teaching. The session will be highly interactive and those attending are expected to participate!

Dwarf Buys Giant: Spyker’s Acquisition of Saab
Mignon van Halderen (Rotterdam School of Management), Irma Bogenrieder (Rotterdam School of Management)

This case presents the takeover of Saab by Spyker Cars (Spyker)the Dutch boutique sports carmaker. On 24 November 2009, Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker noticed Saab owned by General Motors (GM) was for sale Muller grabbed the opportunity. He wrote an email to GM vice president Bob Lutz and eight minutes later got a positive reply. After 93 days, the deal was closed. Muller was confident he could make Saab profitable by 2012 and restore its once iconic status, which GM let sink.

Ballis's Benchmark

This is the case of Margeret Ballis, a she begins her job in investment management. Ballis is trying to asses her ability to consistently outperform the stock market; she questions whether it is even possible to achieve consistent performance as a fund manager. Using data downloaded from Morningstar, Inc on 2852 mutual funds, students are prompted to investigate whether funds that beat the S&P 500 Index benchmark during a 5-year period are more likely to beat the Index over the next 5 years.

Narragansett Brewing Company: The Rebirth of a Brand
Christopher J. Roethlein (Bryant University), John K. Visich (Bryant University)

Four years into the rebirth of the once popular Narragansett beer, Mark Hellendrung, President of Narragansett Brewing Company (NBC),has to decide on the long-term strategic direction of NBC from the following four major options: 1) continue with the current outsourced brewing and logistics system; 2) continue with the current outsourced brewing arrangement, but change the distribution system; 3) switch production to a large national brewer; 4) build a brewery in Rhode Island.

Calling All Case-Writers!

The Decision Sciences Institute has a tradition of promoting case-based teaching and supporting the development of teaching cases. We invite case-writers in all DSI disciplines to submit their new and engaging teaching cases to the 2011 Best Teaching Case Competition.

Authors of three finalist cases, selected by a panel of case experts, will present their case studies and analysis at a regular session at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute to be held in Boston, Massachusetts. The panel of judges will then select the winner from among the finalists, based both on the written material and the presentation. The winning case will be announced at the Awards luncheon, where the authors will receive a cash award.

The Case Studies Award will be awarded based primarily on the following criteria:

  • Worthy Focus. Does the case address an important and timely business or managerial issue?

  • Learning Challenge. Does the case engage students in an appropriate and intellectually challenging way?

  • Clarity. Does the case present the facts, data, and decisions to be made in a clear and concise way, consistent with its focus and objectives?

  • Professional Appearance. Does the case and teaching note present a well-written and complete teaching package?

  • Potential for Use. Is the case and teaching note likely to receive widespread and effective use?

  • Comprehensive Analysis. Does the teaching note provide a complete analysis of the qualitative and quantitative issues raised in the case? Are the theoretical linkages appropriate to the course and the topic?

  • Well-defined Pedagogy. Does the teaching note provide adequate guidance regarding how to teach the case, position the case in the course, and outline key learning points?

Cases not selected as finalists may be published as abstracts in the Proceedings of the 2011 Annual Meeting.

The submission deadline is April 1, 2011. Cases, with the associated teaching note, should be submitted electronically directly to the competition coordinator (see below). Please feel free to contact Dr. Brandon-Jones with any questions.
