Dr. Jatinder (Jeet) N. D. Gupta, Eminent Scholar of Management of Technology, Professor of Information Systems and Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) received the 2011 Outstanding Faculty Award from the UAH Student Government Association. This award is based on excellence in teaching and helping students learn and seek appropriate career opportunities.

A new analysis of the perspective of AACSB-accredited schools regarding the research value of OM journals has been accepted for publication at Omega (2010). How these schools rate the knowledge dissemination of these journals for purposes such as promotion, tenure, awards, and annual merit evaluations is also compared with previously published studies. The Center for Business and Industrial Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, directed by L. Douglas Smith, has been awarded $1.13 million from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to conduct a study of the accuracy of information maintained by the major U.S. credit reporting agencies and to investigate the workings of the FCRA dispute resolution process. Doug and his colleagues Tom Eyssell of UMSL and Mike Staten of University of Arizona are collaborating with professionals at Fair Isaac Corporation to execute the study. The results will inform the FTC as it develops recommendations to Congress for regulatory policies and industry practice. [January 2011] |

Clay Whybark, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was awarded an honorary degree by Corvinus University, a Doctor of Business Administration Honoris Causa, on November 30, 2010 in Budapest Hungary. Gyula Vastag, Corvinus University, received his Doctor of Sciences title from the Hungarian Academy of Science. There are fewer than 3,000 Hungarians in all disciplines that have this qualification, and there is only one level higher in the country, "Member of the Academy" with 360 current holders. Ken Boyer of Ohio State University was named the 2010 Distinguished Scholar by the operations management division at the 2010 Academy of Management meeting in August. The award recognizes "distinguished leaders in the field of operations management." Boyer was cited as an influential scholar with more than 40 published journal papers and for his leadership as co-editor of the Journal of Operations Management. [October 2010]

Barry Render of Rollins College and Jay Heizer of Texas Lutheran University have recently opened an OM Blog for faculty teaching in the operations area. Combining their 75 years of teaching experience, the daily blog (at www.heizerrenderom.wordpress.com) includes teaching tips, classroom exercises, video ideas, guest blogs, and an "OM in the News" feature. The latter collects articles from leading newspapers and magazines, summarizes them, suggests classroom discussion questions, and provides an on-line link to the article. [October 2010] |

Tom Foster, Marriott School of Management-Brigham Young University has been named to the Board of Overseers for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The Board provides oversight relative to the Baldrige process and helps to ensure the integrity of the award.

This award is based on the nominations and selection by the graduate students and approved by the College Executive Committee. |

Ken Kendall, a distinguished professor of management at the Rutgers School of Business-Camden, has been named 2010 Educator of the Year by the Education Special Interest Group, a national organization that devotes itself to information systems education. He was recognized for his efforts to lead the field of information systems (IS) education in terms of teaching, research, and service. He will receive his honor at the Information Systems Educators Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in the fall. Ken is a past president and Fellow of DSI, and he is the author of Systems Analysis and Design (8th ed., Prentice Hall, 2010), which he co-wrote with his wife, Julie Kendall. |

Saleha Khumawala, University of Houston, received a Women of Excellence Award for her work in developing and leading the successful Study Abroad India program for Bauer College students, as well as developing a microfinance education model that uses the tools and success of microfinance to support client children’s education.

Stephen Edward Lunce, 59, Professor and Chair of the Management Information Systems Department in the Dillard College of Business Administration at Midwestern State University, died on May 4, 2007, of complications from an April 8 traffic accident.
Steve was an extremely active member of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) and the Southwest Decision Sciences Institute (SWDSI). He served DSI as regionally elected vice president (2001-2003) and as a member of the Board of Directors, Nominating Committee, Regional Activities Committee, and Doctoral Consortium Faculty. He was initiated into Alpha Iota Delta in 1990 and served multiple terms on the Alpha Iota Delta Liaison Committee. Steve was president of Alpha Iota Delta at the time of his death. In addition, he served as a reviewer, discussant, and/or session chair at almost every annual meeting since 1990 and published numerous papers in the DSI and SWDSI conference Proceedings.

Marcos F. Massoud, The Robert Day School of Economics and Finance at Claremont McKenna College, has been honored with the establishment of the Marcos F. Massoud Endowed Chair in Accounting in recognition of Professor Massoud’s “many contributions to the College and his profession.” Currently the Robert A. Day Distinguished Professor of Accounting, Marc has been a member of DSI since 1970 and was the president of the Western Region during 2000-2001. Also, he has been the president of the Congress of Political Economists International since 2007.

Robert T. Sumichrast was chosen to be dean of the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, effective July 1. Formerly dean of Louisiana State University's business college, Sumichrast succeeded P. George Benson, who left to become president of the College of Charleston. Sumichrast, an authority on management and operations science, was on the faculty of Virginia Tech University from 1984 to 2003, and also taught at Clemson University where he received a doctoral degree in management science. He has held several leadership roles in the Decision Sciences Institute and received a first-place award for a paper he presented the DSI annual meeting in 2004.

Shawnee K. Vickery, professor of operations management in the Broad School of Business at Michigan State University, has been appointed associate dean for academic affairs and research. Her responsibilities include faculty recruiting, human resources, research and research centers, PhD programs, academic strategic planning and information technology services. She had been acting associate dean for Academic Affairs and Research during the 2006-07 academic year. She is also the co-director of the Supply Chain Management Master's Degree program and director of the Integrated Master's Degree Program in Manufacturing and Engineering Management. She received her PhD from the University of South Carolina and has been with the Broad School since 1984. Dean Vickery's research and teaching interests are in the areas of supply chain management, operations management, and management science.
